This page contains everything yo u need to know before coming to Maui. These are the RULES of life - the TIPS for survival .
We have more than 200 years of cumulative experience at helping and advising Hawaii tourists. Don't be deceived by the tongue-in-cheek tone of these rules. Pay attention. Read every rule. You won't regret it.
Rule #1 Be cheap. Don't come to Hawaii without first contacting Activitiesoutlet.com! This rule is the only one you really need to know. It is self-evident and self-explanatory. This rule applies to everything you do in Hawaii.
Rule #2 Call us NOW! During peak season, some of the more popular activities can be sold out up to two weeks in advance. We've seen a lot of people who were disappointed because they were not be able to do what they wanted because they waited too long. A word to the wise.
Rule #3 Ask Us. Let us be your personal concierge. We not only sell activities. We are a wealth of useful information that will make your vacation more enjoyable.
Rule #4 Don't Walk! Rent a car while you're here. There's a lot to do in Hawaii, and a car gives you the freedom to enjoy it all go where you want, when you want, and stay as long as you want. (Next time rent a convertible!)
Rule #5 Pack smart. Be sure to bring sturdy shoes, socks, long pants and a warm top to wear. It's often downright cold at the top of our mountain peaks in the morning - no matter what time of year. Your long pants will also come in handy if you plan to go horseback riding. Also bring Sun Block!
Rule #6 Carry a Camera. The scenery in unparalleled -- and who would believe you were doing the hula, if you don't take a picture?
Rule #7 Stay Longer! Stick around. Add a few days to your planned stay. We've got a lot of island to share with you.
Rule #8 Expect the unexpected. Hawaii's weather offers something for everybody. In the entire world there are 14 climate zones. Hawaii includes 11 of them! (More Trivia)
Rule #9 Remember P.T. Barnum! He said "There's a sucker born every minute!" Don't be taken in by people SELLING you discount coupons, either on the web or elsewhere. All these coupons are available for FREE in Hawaii.
Rule #10 Tidbit Conde Nast magazine has voted Maui the best island in the world 8 years in a row. We like Conde Nast. They know all about islands.
Rule #11 Follow the Herd. Over 2.3 million people visited Maui last year (45,000 a week!) 60% of them are repeat visitors. This is a herd you won't regret following.
Rule #12 Watch your back! Whereever you go, stop and look behind you. As you're gazing at Maui's vistas, turn around. Awesome cliffs, waterfalls and rainbows have a way of sneaking up on you.
Rule #13 Drive Slow. The road to Hana is nicknamed divorce highway. But it's hardly a highway - there are 677 hairpin turns, and 51 one-lane bridges. You'll be lucky to average eight miles per hour. Nevertheless, if you have the stamina, you'll love it!
Rule #14 Take a test drive. Test out your Hana stamina without driving the whole way. Drive thru the West Maui Mountains. Same kind of road but no waterfalls. If you survive this, the Hana road is only three times the distance. P.S. you can test drive the road to Hana, but you still can't get a test divorce, not even in Maui.
Rule #15 Rent smart. Make sure your rental car has a cassette player, not a CD. Self-drive Hana tours are recorded only on cassette. If you are planning to drive the Hana road, this cassette will add dimension to your trip.
Rule #16 Take care of your Feet #1. Pack walking shoes and socks. There are hundreds of spectacular walks on Maui. Be prepared.
Rule #17 Take care of your Feet #2. Put sun block on the top of your feet. Sunburned feet are agony, so lather 'em up. And remember to reapply after you've been in the water.
Rule #18 Go Native. Look Cool. Learn to do the "hang loose" hand sign. This will make you look cool among the natives. IMPORTANT WARNING be sure to use the correct fingers - otherwise you may be sending the wrong message!
Rule #19 Be like the Marines! Always prepared. Always carry a swimsuit and towel when you leave your hotel. Sightseeing? Once you get a look at our beaches, you're going to wish you had your suit and towel.
Rule #20 More Trivia! Kapalua means "arms embracing the sea."
Rule #21 Invest in some gear. Carry your own snorkel and mask. Although all snorkel operators provide this equipment as a part of their activity, it still makes sense to have your own. It's easy to rent a mask for snorkeling, but not as easy to find one that firs properly (you can even get vision correction lenses). Take the time to shop for a good one - with proper care it will last for years.
Rule #22 Be a Camel! Always carry your own water. It's easy to get dehydrated in Hawaii's tropical climate. So pack up a little H2O and drink up.
Rule #23 Beat the odds. There is a 50/50 chance you will see nothing if you drive up to Haleakala early in the morning. Some mornings the whole peak is covered by clouds. Hedge your bet - call 871-5054 before you leave your hotel. This number has a pre-recorded weather report about conditions at the summit.
Rule #24 Avoid Frostbite! You don't have to take a tour for the Haleakala sunrise - you can do it yourself. Plan to leave your hotel about 3:30 AM. Dress warm. Bring the comforter from your bed - We guarantee you'll need it. If you're the romantic type, you can find other uses for the comforter!
Rule #25 Fly with the crowd. The most popular helicopter flight is a 45 minute flight. We have some of our best discounts on these flights. Taking a helicopter ride over the spectacular landscape is an experience you will never forget.
Rule #26 Watch Smart. If you're coming during whale season you might consider bringing binoculars. These can really add to the thrill of a "whale watch".
Rule #27 Snorkel where the fish are. The most popular snorkel destination is Molokini.
Rule #28 The early bird gets his fish. The earlier you are on the ocean, the calmer the water. Generally most snorkel trips start from 6:30AM to 8AM, with check-in a half hour earlier. If you're going on a snorkel trip, you might as well see some fish.
Rule #29 Seasick?? If you get seasick easily, here's some good advice. Buy a product called "Bonine". It works like dramamine but does not induce drowsiness. Take one dose the evening before you go out on the ocean, and another one in the morning.
Rule #30 Can't spell? Move to Hawaiii. The Hawaiian alphabet has only 12 letters. The vowels are the same as in English A, E, I, O, U. The consonants are limited to only H, K, L, M, N, P, and W. A great way to pass the time while driving is to make up "Hawaiian Words." Just use plenty of P's K's and W's and a liberal sprinkling of vowels.
Rule #31 Humuhumunukunukuapua'a. This is a real Hawaiian word. It is the "Pig-Nosed Trigger Fish," the official fish of Hawaii. Even in your wildest imagination you could not have come up with a name like that.
Rule #32 Rule WWW (Winter Whale Watch). A common mistake visitors make is thinking that "whale season" is all year long. It is not. It's in the Winter, from about mid December to mid May, peaking in February and March. The best island for watching them is Maui, as they mate and "calve" in the relatively shallow waters between Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Kahoolawe.
